The previous two postings were "official" releases. I wanted to add a few
notes to give you some more information about System Update 1.04.
* We've been listening to your reports and your experiences, and we think
you'll find that 1.04 really is a much, much more useable system. Almost
every single problem area has been addressed in this update. You'll be
quite happy with the results.
* Right now, System Update 1.04 is available in two forms: By various bulletin
boards and ftp sites, and by a mail-back system available by calling 1-800-
SOS-APPL. I'd like to tell you about two more avenues by which you'll be
able to obtain System Update 1.04:
* First, you'll be happy to hear that Newton Connection for Macintosh 1.0
** Is Now Shipping ** and if it's not in your local dealer, it's only
a matter of delivery times now. My understanding is that 1.04 comes with
the system update package on disk.
* Second, we will have a free Software Update service. In just a few more
days, you'll be able to dial a 1-800 number directly, using your Newton
MessagePad and Fax/Data modem, and receive the update automatically.
The software works great; At this point we're literally just hooking
everything up to the 800 lines and testing everything with the real
phone company hookup. We'll let you know the instant this service is
available.
* Some of you, if you've studied the instructions for the Update, have
probably noticed that they ask the user to perform a second restart of the
system. I know this sounds a bit strange. One of the major areas of
improvement in the 1.03 and 1.04 System Updates was to access as much
memory as possible for the system to use. This is what makes the system
run faster and more efficiently, and what makes sure that you don't see
the recognition problems some users were having with 1.02.
When you first install 1.04, almost all of the new improvements and bug
fixes are immediately available. However, there are a few things which we
do, which require a couple of go-arounds to get cleaned up completely. The
second reset allows us to finish up the job, and get the system into the
best shape possible.
The end result is a system which requires restarting much LESS frequently,
so we think the overall result will be a big win.
* I want to reiterate that EVERY SINGLE problem we've seen reported on
bulletin boards such as this one, or on the many commercial services, has
been entered into our tracking system and investigated - and in most cases,
fixed. We want your Newtons to work as much as you do. So keep those
observations and reports coming. They really do make a difference.
* Another source of bug reports has been our excellent third parties. I think
some of the most exciting things about Newton are still yet to happen - just
wait until you see some of the incredible 3rd party software which is just
weeks or days away from the market.
